Bem-vindos a Rekall, a empresa que pode transformar os seus sonhos em memórias reais. Para Douglas Quaid - um trabalhador comum com uma bela esposa - uma viagem pela mente parece-lhe ser a solução ideal para fugir à sua vida frustrante e memórias reais de um super-espião pode bem ser o que ele precisa. Mas quando o procedimento corre mal, Quaid transforma-se num homem procurado. Ao ter de fugir da polícia, controlada pelo Chancellor Cohaagen, o líder do mundo livre, Quaid alia-se a uma combatente rebelde para encontrarem o chefe da resistência e parar Cohaagen. A linha entre fantasia e a realidade fica confusa e o mundo de Quaid balança quando ele descobre a sua verdadeira identidade, o seu verdadeiro amor e o seu verdadeiro destino.
