Fletcher Reede é um advogado obcecado com a carreira, disposto a tudo para conseguir ganhar os casos, nem que para isso tenha de mentir. Mas o mau hábito acaba por afectar a própria família, colocando em risco o seu casamento com Audrey e o relacionamento com o filho Max. No dia do aniversário de Max, Fletcher não pode ir à festa e inventa uma desculpa. Quando chega altura de apagar as velas, o menino pede um desejo: que o seu pai não minta por um dia. E o desejo de Max vai realizar-se.
