Richard Nixon permaneceu em silêncio por três anos após renunciar à presidência dos Estados Unidos. Em 1977, deu uma entrevista a David Frost, afim de esclarecer pontos obscuros do período em que esteve no governo e usá-la para um possível retorno à política. Mas o que se seguiu foi um duelo televisivo acompanhado por milhões de pessoas ao longo de quatro noites.
